Mexico Safety Addressed
Every day, we are fielded with questions regarding the safety of travel to Mexico. U.S. news stories can be pretty scary – drug cartels, kidnappings, vicious acts of violence, the list goes on. It’s no wonder clients hesitate to plan a vacation there. But as with much of the media today, perception is many times a far cry from reality. Mexico as a whole has taken the brunt of a huge amount of negative publicity for less than half of the states in Mexico that have had acts of violence.
First, let’s address the size of Mexico in comparison to the United States. The entire country is about one fifth the size of the US, or equal to all of Eastern Europe. Think about it this way – if you are located in Pennsylvania, and there is an act of violence in Florida, is this violent act going to deter you from visiting Washington D.C? This year to date (February 15, 2012), our very own City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, has lost 48 people to murder, yet we continue to travel there for work, a night out with friends, concerts, sports, or to ride the duck.
Reality #1 – The Riviera Maya is a 24 hour drive or approximately 1200 miles to areas of caution listed by the U.S. Department of State. This is the same distance from Philadelphia to Miami Florida.
What about safety in the tourist areas? During a recent trip to Cancun/Riviera Maya, we had the opportunity to meet with Jesus Almaguer Salazar, CEO, Cancun CBB. The Cancun area was built specifically for tourists in the early 1970’s. Visitors are the areas main revenue and they do everything to keep people coming back. During our visit, we saw numerous resorts, went on an excursion to a natural park, zip lined through the jungle, and passed through various security check points. Resorts keep their guests safe by checking every name that comes through the gate. The local government performs random vehicle checks along the highway. All of these checks and balances act as a major deterrent to illegal behavior! Not one time in our stay did we feel that our safety was at risk.
Reality #2 – Travel with common sense. Don’t flash money around. Don’t hitchhike. Don’t take candy from strangers. Discuss destination options with your Travel Consultant.
Mexico has developed the reputation as being a huge party destination for rowdy underage spring breakers, especially Cancun. Not surprisingly, many hotels in Cancun have put age restrictions on their rooms, particularly during spring break. Those hotels that have not regulated their drunken co-ed occupancy are not desirable for anyone else anyway. If you are looking for a Caribbean beach destination, travel south of Cancun to experience one of the top 10 beaches in the world. For a Pacific experience, try Huatulco or Cabo San Lucas. In the center of Mexico lies San Miguel De Allende, a historic artist’s sanctuary that will engross you in Mexican culture. The city dates back almost 500 years and is a UNESCO world heritage site. Mayan culture abounds on the Yucatan peninsula where coincidently, there are no noted danger zones for tourists.
Reality #3 – Don’t limit your travel experiences. Mexico offers more than beautiful beaches and all-inclusive resorts. Travel smart, broaden your horizons, and learn something new at one of the most accessible destinations to the United States.
Aside from all of the once in an eternity opportunities to celebrate a new beginning in 2012 with the end of the Mayan calendar, Mexico has so much to offer. Don’t let the news or rare horror stories scare you away. Travel safe, travel smart, and visit Mexico. You will not be disappointed.

Ghostly Family Gathering
The Best Holiday Investment
The average American spends $750 per year on Holiday gifts. For a family with two adults, that equals $1500 on stuff that may be collecting dust in a few months’ time. When I think back over the past 31 Christmases, only a few of them really stand out and coincidently, they all involve travel. Now, I can’t tell you how old I was or what we did every day of the trip. What I can tell you is that each vacation had some very memorable events that could never be recreated.
I remember spending the night in a castle somewhere in England. I shared a room with my grandmother and she snored all night. We arrived the day after Christmas, on Boxers Day, and everything was closed. We traveled from London to Wales, making stops along the way. Years later, I spent Christmas in Grand Cayman with my brothers before wives and kids were involved. I remember going scuba diving with my dad – it was his first time and he loved it! On Christmas Eve, carolers drove down on lit up trailers singing for everyone to hear and there was even a lit Christmas tree outside of our condo on the beach. I remember returning to Grand Cayman after my brothers got married and started families and we had family dinners every night together for a week. That was the last time we were all together. In the years that we have not been forced to commit to a week away it has been nearly impossible to have everyone in one place at one time. When I think back to all of these special little moments, I realize that these are the moments that define what family is and what we mean to each other.
None of these fantastic Christmas’ involved material objects. In fact, we all agreed that there would be no traditional gifts during these years. Our gifts would be precious time spent together. Now that I have a family of my own and the holidays are fast approaching, I wonder how many more toys my 2 year old needs, and what my 18 year old step son could use, and then my husband, who has everything and needs nothing, what can he open under the tree on Christmas morning? Sure, there were toys and clothes that lit my face up when I was their age, but what really made a lasting impact were not the material objects, it was the experiences we shared together. The laughter, the time, the excitement of traveling from one place to another and the discovery of a newdestination with the people that mean the most to me. I want to give the same thing to my family.
Clothes are grown out of and toys break and get boring. Jewelry gets tarnished and lost and electronics become dated almost as soon as they hit the sales shelf. Memories with the ones that we love last forever. Put your hard earned $1500 this year towards creating memories with travel, discovering a new part of the world, and enriching your family with a gift that cannot be experienced by anyone else.
Julie’s Royal Caribbean Enchantment of the Seas Ship Inspection
My first steps on a cruise ship were exciting yet rather intimidating during my first ship inspection on the Royal Caribbean ‘s Enchantment of the Seas. There were so many different amenities on each deck that I did not know where to begin. Luckily, I had a tour guide to lead the way and ensure we saw everything the ship has to offer. First up were the different room categories. We saw the Royal Suite with balcony (my personal favorite!), Royal Family Suite with balcony (my second favorite!), Junior Suite with balcony, Superior Ocean View Stateroom with balcony, Grand Suite with balcony, Owner’s Suite with balcony, and a Large stateroom. By offering so many different room categories, there is truly a room for everyone.
The food offered at lunch was exquisite. If this was any indication as to the full menu, then Royal Caribbean definitely far exceeds its expectations and has something on the menu that will appeal to everyone. I opted for the salmon whereas others enjoyed an alfredo pasta dish or steak. Everyone was more than pleased with their meal and all wanted to stay for dinner.
On the last leg of our tour, we saw the Solarium, an indoor pool area for adults only. I could easily picture myself relaxing on a chaise with a drink in hand while cruising at sea. The fitness center and spa were simply amazing. Can you imagine a massage while overlooking the sea? The Viking Crown Lounge was my favorite area. It is a glass enclosed lounge that turns into a bar at night and then around 11pm transitions to a nightclub fully equipped with a dance floor and dj.
I was extremely jealous of the cruisers coming onboard the ship to embark on their cruise. With my Royal Caribbean knowledge and first-hand experience being onboard a ship, I can’t wait to help others plan a cruise that will create memories of a lifetime.
Jamaica
This week’s Destination Spotlight is on Jamaica! Travel Consultant Jennifer Sammartino shares why she loves this destination and where she goes everytime she visits!
As a travel consultant, I have to opportunity to travel to many destinations when it comes to my personal vacation. I usually weigh all my options, but ultimately comes down to “old faithful”. This was my 23 trip to Jamaica in my 22 years as a travel consultant. People ask my why I continue to choose
Jamaica. My simple answer is “It’s Beautiful”. The people, the mountains, the beach… everything. Every time I land in Montego Bay airport, I feel like I’m coming home.
My husband and I choose our favorite Sandals resort for our last vacation. Sandals Whitehouse European Village & Spa. It’s located on the southwest coast of Jamaica. It is very secluded. Perfect for a romantic, quiet getaway. The drive from the Montego Bay airport is about an hour and 45 minutes. The long drive is well worth it.
Check in was a breeze. We were escorted to our room. We had a Grand Honeymoon Beachfront Walkout Concierge room located on the first floor of the Italian Village. Our refrigerator was stocked with soda, juice, Red Stripe Beer, wine and liquor. With all the drinks and room service, there was no reason to leave our room. However, the landscape of the resort is definitely something to be admired.
Our favorite spot during the day was the Riviera Pool in the Italian Village. The pool has a swim up bar. They would have a few activities centered around the pool or even in the pool. They were never intrusive if you just wanted to relax. The swim up pool bar tender even remembered us from last year. They are
incredible. He even remembered my favorite drink and had it ready for me each time I’d head for the pool.
There are 7 different restaurants to choose from. My first stop was Bluefield’s Beach Club. I don’t feel like I’m on vacation until I’ve had my first Purple Rain drink and an authentic Jamaican Beef Patty. Bluefield’s make some of the best Jamaican Patties. Our other favorites for dinner were Jasmine’s with it’s Asian Fusion cuisine and Eleanor’s with it’s white glove service and Caribbean flair.
One evening they had a huge outdoor gala set up around the Riviera Pool. Sandals has started a charity, The Sandals Foundation. The Sandals Foundation seeks to help fulfill the promise of the Caribbean community through investment in sustainable projects in education; environment and community which improve people’s lives and preserve our natural surroundings. During the Gala, you could purchase a biodegradable paper lantern for $10. You lit the lantern and lifted it up in the air to watch is aimlessly float into the night sky. Knowing all the monies collected for this event was going directly to the local school
made it an even more beautiful sight.
We were lucky enough to spend a full week here. One week is never enough. Sandals Whitehouse is by far my favorite Sandals resort. We are already planning our next trip there for next year. We can’t wait to go back and see our Jamaican family again.
Julie’s Adventure Travel
Julie Oates, our newest addition to WhirlAway Travel & Cruise Consultants shares with us her Adventure Travel experiences…
I have never been known as the adventurous type. In fact, I can remember my mom always telling me I needed to “toughen up” day in and day out for as long as I could remember. I always knew though that one day, I’d be able to prove her wrong.
A weekend trip to Interlaken, Switzerland while I was studying in Spain was able to do just that. My first full day there I rented ski clothes and headed on over to ski the Swiss Alps like it was no big deal. The fact that I was traveling with a girl from Denver and two other people who had been skiing since they could walk was a bit intimidating. They were aware I had never been on skis before but since I had been the one to convince everyone to jump out of an airplane the next day, I knew there was no getting out of this one.
My nerves didn’t set in until we got to the top of the mountain and I saw just how steep the Alps really are. In fact, the big sign in front of me said we were on the highest mountain in all of Switzerland. That’s when the hyperventilating kicked in. On a side note, there are no “bunny slopes” in the Alps. With all these
three year olds flying past me not even using ski poles, there I was on the side, crying and praying the day would be over. With my friends nowhere in sight (thanks to their skiing talents as well as the blizzard starting), I decided to quit and just head to the ski lodge for some hot chocolate and people watching.
The next day, the real adventure began. We spent the day at Skydive Switzerland watching the group of people we were with go up in the plane and come
down attached to a parachute. Somehow, we were the last group of the bunch to go, which made it even more nerve racking. The plane felt smaller than my closet and I wondered how four of us plus four instructors and four camera men as well as a pilot were going to fit, but somehow we managed. We were told the plane cannot land with that many people in it, so once we were up we had no choice but to jump. I think this was a lie to prevent us from chickening out. I was the last one to jump out of the plane. I only remember seeing my friend Matt jump and couldn’t believe my eyes when he just dropped so quickly and out of sight. I don’t know how I managed to miss seeing Michael and Ellese jump when they were right in front of me, but I suppose I was focused on what exactly I was about to do. The next thing I knew, I was floating in negative degrees above the clouds flying over the Swiss Alps with the sun setting and a rainbow in view, as well as a cameraman in my face videoing every second. After I landed in a pile of snow (roughly, might I add) I couldn’t believe what I had just done. We had to hurry back to the Hostel to get ready for nighttime dogsledding.
Nighttime dogsledding was simply amazing. It was completely pitch dark out so the only light we had to go by was the reflection of the moon hitting the snow. We sled all the way down the Swiss Alps, with a few crashes here and there, for close to two straight hours. Once again, I was separated from my friends so I had to enjoy this experience with complete strangers and whomever I would manage to occasionally collide with. Afterwards, we were rewarded with complimentary cheese fondue. After this exhilarating day, we fell into our beds and awoke the next morning to head back to Barcelona.
After this adventure, I’d say I finally managed to join the wild side. Adventure Travel is now my favorite type of travel, and in my opinion, the only way to travel. Doing outrageous escapades in such an unknown place is what makes the experience all the more exhilarating and memorable. Skydiving is something I have always had an interest in, but skydiving in Pennsylvania just can’t compete with Skydiving in the Swiss Alps. I highly recommend Adventure Travel for anyone looking to enhance their travel experience and maybe knock off a few things from their bucket list. Activities such as the ones I did can be
experienced in many different countries, but of course Switzerland would be my top recommendation.
5 Tips for Planning Your Next Trip
In order for us to help you find the best vacation value for you, there are a few things that we recommend you do to ensure that the planning process goes smoothly.
- Dates
Choose your travel dates. Prices for the same vacation can vary drastically between high and low seasons. During winter and spring breaks, prices tend to be higher, whereas Europe peaks in the summer months. When kids are out of school, prices are at a premium. Wondering when the best time to travel to a particular destination is? Ask one of our travel consultants!
- Passports
Apply for your passports, or if you already have them, ensure that they are valid for 6 months past the date of your return. Wait times vary depending on the demand at the time. If you need any help with this process, please let us know. For forms and the most current instructions to obtain or renew your U.S. passport, visit http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html
- Budget
Set a realistic budget. As with any other purchase, you get what you pay for. Airfare has recently been at an all-time high. We want you to have a stress free, memorable vacation. If the sheets were scratchy, the ac didn’t work, and you were crammed on a bus with 50 other people for that bottom dollar tour of wine country, how happy are you going to be? We will help you find the best experience for your budget, but please keep in mind that luxury comes at a price. How bad does a cheap vacation need to be to make it ok?
- Priorities
In an ideal world, we would all have disposable income to make sure that every last detail of our vacation is top of the line superb. If your budget does no allow for this, what is most important to you? If you are going to an all-inclusive resort would you rather have gourmet food at a sit down restaurant every day or are individualized day excursions more important to you? While we strive to ensure that every area of your vacation exceeds your expectations, it helps us to know what your priorities are so that what is most important to you is most important to us when putting your customized vacation together.
- Insurance
Accidents happen. Lost luggage happens. Sickness happens. We don’t plan on it but we hope that you prepare for it. Take the risk out of your vacation and get the insurance. Our travel consultants will help you find the coverage that you need.
No request is too big. We want you to have a vacation that you can get excited for and later brag about to all of your friends and family when you get home. Get prepared and give us a call!
